"I think that there’s a bit of hysteria around energy gels and bars when cyclists are on the road. Many who are just going for an hours ride think that they need to have at least one gel and one bar.
There are lots of great recipes for snacks you can have when cycling, jogging or cross-country skiing. You’ll also save money. Each recipe gives about twenty bars and costs much less than commercial bars from the sports shop. "  Henrik Orre

Why not give this recipe for homemade muesli bars a go.

MUESLI BARS

MAKES APPROX 20 BARS

A traditional and very simple bar made from muesli and honey. It’s also very good value for money, this recipe makes about 20 bars.

  • 400 ml runny honey
  • 500 g muesli (preferably one with lots of dried fruits and nuts)

  1. Preheat the oven to 90°C
  2. Bring the honey to the boil and let it simmer for 10 minutes on medium heat
  3. Mix the warm honey with the muesli
  4. Spread in a baking tray with 3–4 cm depth
  5. Bake in the oven for about 1 hour
  6. Leave at room temperature for 24 hours. Don’t ever put in the fridge; it will get moist and fall apart.
  7. Cut into squares and wrap in aluminium foil
