Rico Baby Cotton Soft DK

Colours: Melon (014), Fuchsia (012), Light Yellow (009) and Mint (015)

Amount: 10g in each colour

KNITTING NEEDLES & EXTRAS 

Set of four 3.75mm double-pointed knitting needles

Stitch marker

2cm pompom maker (or cardboard to make a template)

TENSION

23 sts and 29 rows to 10cm (4in) measured over st st using 3.75mm needles.

TO MAKE THE CAP

Make one cap in each colour.

Cast on 32 sts, using the knit cast-on method. Distribute sts on three needles (10 sts on needle  one, 11 sts on needle two, 11 sts on needle three). Place a marker at beg of round and join for working in the round, being careful no sts are twisted. As this is such a small circumference, use needle three to knit the first stitch in the
round 1, then change to needle four to continue.

Rounds 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5: *K1, P1; rep from * to end.

Rounds 6, 7, 8 and 9: Knit.

Round 10: [K6, K2tog] 4 times. (28 sts)

Round 11: Knit.

Round 12: [K5, K2tog] 4 times. (24 sts)

Round 13: Knit.

Round 14: [K4, K2tog] 4 times. (20 sts)

Round15: Knit.

Round 16: [K3, K2tog] 4 times. (16 sts)

Round 17: Knit.

Round 18: [K2, K2tog] 4 times. (12 sts)

Cut off yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle, pass the needle through the remaining live stitches, pull to draw closed and secure. Leave the yarn tail to use to sew the mini pompom to the top of the cap.

TO MAKE THE POMPOM

Make one 4cm pompom in each colour. If you do not have a pompom maker, cut two identical cardboard rings, each 6cm in diameter and with a hole in the centre 2cm in diameter. Place the two rings together.

Now using the pompom maker or the cardboard rings, thread the yarn round and round the rings – the more yarn you use, the thicker the pompom will be. Holding the wrapped rings securely, cut the yarn around the edge of the rings, inserting the scissor tip between the rings as you cut.

Tie a long length of yarn securely around the centre of the strands between the rings, pull tightly and knot. Gently remove the pompom from the rings and fluff
up the pompom. Trim into shape, if necessary.

Using the long yarn tail on the cap, sew the pompom to the centre of the top of the cap.
